李杜啁啾後，乾坤寂寞中。

江山自閑暇，片月掛長空。

"저녁 정경을 내다보며"

 

이태백과 두보가 짹짹거린 후

하늘과 땅의 사이가 적막합니다

강과 산은 스스로 한가하고

조각달이 드넓은 공중에 걸렸습니다

 

     역자평: 시선 이백과 시성 두보의 노래를 새들 짹짹거리는 소리에 비유한 첫 구절이 지나치게 오만하다고 생각했는지 일부 번역자들은 이 두 시인의 시를 낭독하는 백운선생 자신의 목소리를 새소리에 비유한 것으로 번역하기도 합니다. 그런데 그런 읽기는 더 큰 문제를 만들어 냅니다. 남의 시를 낭송하는 새소리 같은 목소리가 하늘과 땅 사이를 조용하게 했다는 해석을 피할 수 없으니까요.  제 번역의 토대가 되는 읽기는 두 위대한 시인의 목소리를 새소리에 비유해도 무방할 뿐 아니라, 설사 지나치다 하더라도, 그 새소리가 하늘과 땅 사이를 조용하게 할 힘을 가졌고, 자신은 그 적막 속에서 아무 목소리도 낼 수 없음을 인정하고 있습니다. 오만하다는 판단이 오히려 이상합니다.

"Looking out at an Evening Scene"

 

Since Li Bai and Du Fu chirped and chirred,

Everywhere between heaven and earth has remained taciturn.

Rivers and mountains are leisurely by themselves,

And a sliver of the moon hangs in the vast sky.

 

       Translator's Note: Perhaps worrying about the first line, in which songs of two great poets, Li Bai and Du Fu, are described as birds' chirping, to be excessive, or even arrogant, some renditions make the birds' chirping the poet's own voice of chanting the poems of the great poets.  This raises, however, even more serious questions when read with the rest of the poem.  Is the poet saying that his own voice of reciting the poems of others could hush down everything between heaven and earth to quietude?  The reading that informs my rendition follows the syntactic and grammatic structure of the line.  There is nothing wrong with the chirping and chirring of birds, nor is there anything wrong with matching the voices of Li Bai and Du Fu with birds' songs.  Besides, what is compared with the voice of birds has the power of bringing quietude to the world, and the poet, at least indirectly, admits that he is one who is hushed down together with everything and is unable to do anything about that.
