신항,"백아 伯牙"

〈伯牙〉
 
我自彈吾琴，不須求甞音。
鍾期亦何物，強辨絃上心。
 
신항 (자는 용이, 시호는 문효, 1477-1507)
 
"백아"
 
나는 내 스스로 가야금을 탈 뿐
누구에게 그 소리 들어 달라고 청하지 않습니다
종자기는 또 어떤 사람인지 모르나
억지를 쓰며 가야금줄 위의 마음을 이야기합니다.
 

     주: 제목의 백아伯牙와 세째 행의 종자기鍾子期는 중국 춘추시대 진晉나라의 인물입니다. 백아는 칠현금의 명인이었고, 종자기는 그 음악을 잘 이해해준 친구였습니다. 종자기가 죽자 백아가 칠현금을 버렸다는 이야기에서 좋은 친구를 "소리를 아는 사람"이라는 뜻으로 지음知音이라고 부르는 표현이 생겼습니다.

I just play the zither by myself,
And do not to seek anyone to listen to my music.
Who the hell is Zhongzi Qi?
He presents forced arguments about the mind on the strings.
 

       Note: Boya in the title and Zhongzi Qi in Line #3 are historical figures if the state of Jin in the Spring and Autumn period. Zhongzi Qi is said to know what went on in Boya's mind when he played the zither.  When Zhongzi Qi died, Boya cut the strings of his zither.  The relationship between the two is the source of the word, zhiyin 知音, or "one who knows the sound," as a synonymous expression of "soul mate."
