〈題德山溪亭柱〉

 

請看千石鍾，非大扣無聲。

爭似頭流山，天鳴猶不鳴。

 

        注：頭流山是智異山之別稱，位於韓國南部。詩題中之德山亦指智異山，含周圍土壤肥沃之意。

"덕산계곡 정자의 기둥에 적습니다"

 

천 가마니만큼 무거운 저 종을 보시지요

힘껏 두드리지 않으면 소리가 나지 않습니다

저 두류산과 겨루기라도 하는지

하늘이 울어도 울지 않을 듯합니다

 

      주: 두류산은 지리산의 다른 이름입니다. 제목에 들어있는 덕산 역시 지리산을 지칭하는데, 토양이 좋아 사람들이 덕을 본다는 뜻이라 합니다.

"Inscribed on a Pillar of a Pavilion by a Stream in Virtuous Power Mountain"

 

Pray look at the bell as heavy as thousand bags,

Unless hit hard, it makes no sound.

As if vying with Turyu Mountain,

It might not ring even when heaven does.

 

        Note: Turyu 頭流 is another name of Chiri 智異 Mountain, in the southern part of Korea. Tõksan 德山, rendered "Virtuous Power Mountain" in the title, is also an alternative name of the mountain, named as such because people benefit from the fertile land around it.
