憶兄

 

一簾斜日在西林，欲散離愁步綠陰。

塘草依依空有夢，荊花杳杳自傷心。

去時白雪猶殘臘，今日黃鸝已好音。

魚鴈江天無信息，登樓遙望悵難禁。

 

注：第四句荊花樹，亦稱紫荊，指兄弟。梁朝吳均《續齊諧集》傳田真兄弟三人析產之事。「堂前有紫荊樹一株，議破為三，荊忽枯死。真謂諸弟：『樹本同株，聞將分破，所以憔悴，是人不如木也。』因悲不自勝，兄弟相感，不復分產，樹亦復榮。」

"오라버니를 기억합니다"

 

주렴 하나에 비스듬히 비쳤던 해가

   서쪽 수풀에 있어

헤어진 아픔을 떨쳐내려

   푸른 그림자 속을 걷습니다

 

연못가 풀 하늘하늘

   하릴없이 꿈을 꾸고

형아우꽃 아련하게

   혼자 마음 아파하겠지요

 

가시던 때는 흰 눈 내린

   동지섣달 이었는데

오늘은 벌써 꾀꼬리

   노랫소리가 예쁩니다

 

강 속 물고기도 하늘 위 기러기도

   오라버니의 서신을 전하지 않아

누각에 올라 멀리 바라봅니다

   한스러움을 금할 길 없어요

 

주: "형아우꽃"이라 번역한 형화(荊花)는 자형화(紫荊花)이라 부르기도 하고, 순우리말로는 박태기나무꽃이라 하는데, 형제를 뜻합니다.  가지에 꽃이 다닥다닥 피기 때문에 올망졸망 함께 자라는 형제를 뜻한다는 속설도 있으나 문헌 근거와는 거리가 있는 설명입니다.  양나라 오균(吳均)이 편한 《속제해집(續齊諧集)》이라는 책은 자형나무 조에 다음과 같은 이야기를 전합니다. "전진의 세 형제가 재산을 나눌 때 집 앞에 있던 자형 한 그루를 셋으로 나누자고 의논하자 그 나무가 갑자기 말라 죽었다. 전진이 동생들에게 말했다. 본디 한 그루의 나무인데 곧 부서져 나뉠 것이라는 말이 들리자 초췌해졌다. 사람이 나무만 못하다는 말이다. 그로 인해 슬픔을 이기지 못한 형제들이 느끼는 바 있어 더 이상 재산을 나누지 않기로 했고, 나무도 다시 살아나 잘 자랐다."

"Longing for an Elder Brother"

 

The sun that shone aslant on a curtain

   Is now in the west woods,

And I went to walk in the tree shade

   To cast off the painful sorrows of separation.

 

Grass by the pond, swaying lightly,

   Dreams a listless dream;

Redbuds, the brotherhood flowers, from faraway

   Must be aching the heart by themself.

 

When you parted, it was the time of white snow,

   The last month of the year;

Today, golden orioles sing

   In beautiful voices already.

 

No fish in the river, no geese in the sky,

   Is bringing your letter.

I climb the tower to look out into distant,

   Where I find worries difficult to shake off.

 

Note: The flower in the fourth line, translated here as "redbuds" is read as the flower of brotherhood based on a textual source, the Xu Qixieji compiled by Wu Jun of Liang.  It relays a story of three brothers: When the discussion of three brothers of Tian Zhen reached the topic of the redbuds tree in front of the house, they talked about breaking it into three pieces.  The tree suddenly withered and died. Zhen said to his brothers, "This tree is supposed to be one, and hearing that it will be broken, it turned sallow.  This means that we were inferior to the tree."  The brothers felt very sorry and decided not to divide the possession.  The tree came back to life and prospered.
