憶兄湖南行

 

柳邊相送罷，不忍見鴻羣。

心逐東流水，愁連北去雲。

聯床應有夢，同氣但依君。

春草池塘雨，那堪讀古文。

（七句雨字，警修堂本作兩，疑誤。）

 

注：此首用謝靈運〈登池上樓〉不僅在第七句。柳、鴻、雲等字互見。但〈春草池塘雨〉，出自謝詩〈池塘生春草〉句值得玩味。傳康樂寤寐間見其從弟謝惠連後得此句，故曾自云有神助。竹西用其兄弟相憶之意也。

"호남으로 가신 오라버니를 그리워합니다"

 

버드나무 옆에서 보내 드린 후부터는

기러기 떼를 견디며 볼 수 없습니다

 

내 마음은 동쪽으로 흐르는 강물을 따르고

내 근심은 북쪽으로 떠가는 구름으로 이어집니다

 

침대에 기대면 꿈을 꾸시겠지요

형제자매 중에 오직 오라버니께 의지했어요

 

봄 풀잎 돋아나는 연못가에 비가 내리는데

어찌 차마 옛날 글을 읽을 수 있나요

 

주: 이 작품은 남북조시대 시인 사령운(謝靈運, 385-433)의 시 "연못가 누대에 올라(登池上樓)"를 이용합니다. 일곱째 구절, "봄 풀 돋아나는 연못가에 비가 내린다(春草池塘雨),"이 사령운의 "연못가에 봄 풀이 자란다(池塘生春草)"는 구절을 상기시킵니다. 버드나무, 기러기, 구름 등의 시어가 두 수에 모두 등장한다는 것도 죽서가 이 작품을 쓸 때, 사령운을 마음에 두고 있었음을 알 수 있습니다. 두 수의 관계는 여러 차원에서 볼 수 있습니다. 사령운이 꿈결에 종제 사혜련(謝惠連, 407-433)을 보고 이 구절을 지었는데, 매우 만족하여 신이 도운 듯하다고 말했다고 전합니다.  죽서가 오빠를 그리워하는 마음에 사령운을 끌어들인 것으로 보입니다.  사령운이 "연못가 누대에 올라"에서 표현한 여러 차원의 복잡한 정서를 생각하며 죽서의 이 작품을 읽으면 좋겠습니다. 예를 들어 "기러기를 차마 볼 수 없다"는 죽서의 말은 사령운의 시를 통해 깊이 이해할 수 있겠습니다.

"Remembering Elder Brother's Move to South of the Lake"

 

Since sending you off by the willow tree,

I couldn't endure to watch the flock of geese.

 

My heart follows the water flowing east;

My worries get connected to clouds floating north.

 

Lying on a bed, you must be in a dream;

Among us siblings, I have relied only on you.

 

It is raining on the pond by which spring grass grows—

How could I bear to read ancient prose?

 

Notes: This poem alludes to "Ascending a Tower by a Pond (登池上樓)" by Xie Lingyun (謝靈運, 385-433). The first line of the last couplet, "It rains on the pond by which spring grass grows (春草池塘雨)," bears unmistakable resemblance to Xie's line, "By the pond, spring grass grows (池塘生春草)." In addition, dictions such as willow tree, geese, and clouds play important roles in both poems.  I should be noted that the relationship between the two lines referred to earlier can be discussed in many layers.  Xie Lingyun's line is said to have been composed after he saw his cousin, Xie Huilian (謝惠連, 407-433). Pleased with the line, Xie Lingyun said that there must have been a divine assistance.  Bak Jukseo seems to draw on this aspect of Xie's poem to express her longing for her brother.  It would be very helpful to think of Xie's complex emotions expressed in the poem in reading this poem by Bak.  For instance, Bak's line that she "could not endure to watch the flock of geese" would gain a depth of meaning, when read through Xie's poem.
