〈次松江〉

 

彼美松江水，秋來徹底清。

湯盤供日浴，方寸有餘醒。

 

               注：三句用《禮記·大學》：「湯之盤銘曰：『苟日新，日日新，又日新。』」孔穎達疏：「湯之盤銘者，湯沐浴之盤而刻銘為戒。必於沐浴之者，戒之甚也。」〈湯盤〉一詞因而用之為自警。尾句〈方寸〉是一平方寸之小處，但亦可讀作心神。《三國志·蜀志·諸葛亮傳》：「今已失老母，方寸亂矣。」

저 아름다운 송강의 물

가을이 되어 바닥까지 맑습니다

탕왕의 욕조가 매일 씻으라 했듯이

마음에 넘치는 깨우침이 있습니다

 

           주: 세째 행은 《예기禮記·대학大學》의 다음과 같은 말을 원용해 송강에 비유합니다. "탕왕의 욕조에 '하루 새로워 진다면, 하루하루 새로워야 하고, 또 하루 새로워야 한다'고 새겨져 있었다." 공영달은 다음과 같이 설명합니다. "탕왕의 욕조에 새겨진 말은 탕왕이 머리를 감고 몸을 씻는 욕조에 새겨 계율로 삼았다는 말로, 반드시 목욕을 해야 한다는 엄격한 계율이다." 이로 해서 "탕왕의 욕조湯盤"라는 말은 스스로를 경계한다는 뜻으로 쓰입니다. 마지막 행의 "방촌"은 일평방촌 크기의 작은 곳이라는 뜻이나, 마음이라는 뜻으로 읽을 수도 있습니다. 《삼국지三國志·촉지蜀志·제갈량전諸葛亮傳》에 "지금은 이미 어머니를 잃으셨으니 마음(方寸)이 흔들렸습니다"라는 용례가 있습니다.

"Following the Rhyming of Chōng Ch'ōl (Song-gang, lit., Pine River)"

 

The beautiful water of Pine River,

Clear to the bottom as autumn arrives.

As King Tang's tub offers daily bathing,

There is overflowing awakening in the heart.

 

               Note: The third line alludes to a passage in the Daxue Chapter of the Book of Rites, which reads: "The bathing tub of King Tang (of Yin) was inscribed with these words, 'If I am renewed, I must be renewed every day, and renewed again for another day.' Kong Yingda offered the following explanation: 'The words inscribed on the bathing tub of King Tang show that he had the self-admonition inscribed on the tub for him to wash his hair and body.  To say that he must bathe meant that it was a strict admonition.'"  This phrase, "King Tang's bathing tub," has been used to mean self-admonition ever since. The phrase, "square inch (fangcun)" in the last line, can be read as the heart.  The usage can be found in the "Biography of Zhuge Liang" in the History of Three Kingdoms: "Now that the mother is lost, that small place (i.e., the heart) is disturbed."
