〈自題墓誌〉

 

孔子杏壇上，釋迦雙樹下。

古今聖賢人，豈有獨存者。

 

       注：杏壇一詞出自《莊子·漁父》：「孔子遊乎緇帷之林，休坐乎杏壇之上。」後人於曲阜孔廟大成殿前築壇，曾植杏樹，因得杏壇之名。後指孔子授徒講學處。雙樹指釋迦牟尼佛入滅之娑羅雙樹。

"내가 지은 내 묘지명"

 

공자님은 은행나무 강단에서 가르쳤고

석가모니 부처님은 두 그루 나무 아래서 입적하셨지요

예로부터 지금까지 거룩하고 어진 사람이라도

어찌 홀로 존재할 수 있겠습니까

 

     주: "은행나무 강단"은《장자莊子·어부漁父》에서 왔습니다. 공자가 우거진 숲을 노닐고 은행나무단 위에서 쉬었다고 기록하고 있습니다. 후일 공자의 고향 곡부의 공자묘 앞에 단을 짓고 은행나무를 심었기 때문에 행단杏壇이라는 이름이 쓰이기 시작했고, 공자가 제자들을 가르친 곳이라는 의미가 생겼습니다. "두 그루 나무"는 석가모니불이 입적했다는 곳의 지명인 사라쌍수娑羅雙樹를 이릅니다.

"My Own Tomb Inscription"

 

Confucius taught on an ginkgo wood platform;

Shakyamuni passed into Nirvana under twin trees.

Among the holy and the wise from past to present,

How can there be anyone who exists alone?

 

       Note: The name, "ginkgo wood platform," comes from the Zhuangzi, where it is recorded that Confucius rested on a ginkgo wood platform after roaming in a densely wooded area. When a platform was built in front of the Confucius shrine in Qufu, ginkgo trees were planted, and from then the phrase, "ginkgo wood platform," began to be used as a place where Confucius was teaching his students.  "Twin tree" in the second line refers to Suoluo shuangshu , which literally means "twin sal tree," is the name of the place where Shakyamuni Buddha entered into Nirvana.
