日影

 

朝晝殊光照處明，可憐隨物影俱成。

江波萬曲溶溶動，嶺樹千重冉冉輕。

斜掛驛亭催客意，穿過花院碎禽聲。

定知無路追相及，鄧杖堪憐夸父行。

죽서 박씨

 

"햇살"

 

아침과 낮의 빛이 다르지만

   비치는 곳은 밝고

사랑스런 그림자가

   비치는 물건에 따라 이루어집니다

 

만 구비 강 물결

   너울너울 움직이고;

천 겹 고갯마루 나무

   한들한들 가볍습니다

 

역참 정자 비스듬히 걸려

   나그네 심정을 돋우고;

꽃 핀 정원 뚫고 가며

   새 소리를 흩뿌립니다

 

어느 길로 쫓아가도

   따라잡지 못하는 걸 분명히 아니

수풀이 된 지팡이 견디어 내며

   길 떠나는 과보를 사랑했을 겁니다

 

주: 마지막 구절은 "과보가 해를 쫓아간다"는 뜻의 과보축일(夸父逐日)의 고사를 사용합니다. 과보가 해를 쫓아갈 때 지니고 갔다는 지팡이가 등장(鄧杖)이고, 그 지팡이가 과보가 죽은 후 수풀이 되었다고 하는데 그 수풀을 등림(鄧林)이라 합니다.

"Sunbeams"

 

In the morning and in the daytime lights are distinct

   But every place is made bright.

An adorable shadow is formed

   By each thing shined on.

 

Ripples move undulatingly

   As the river flows in myriad turns;

Trees sway lightly

   On the mountain ridges of a thousand layers.

 

The pavilion at the station hanging aslant

   Triggers the feelings of wayfarer;

Piercing through the garden abloom

   It sprinkles chirpings of birds.

 

Knowing clearly that there's no catching up

   Whichever road is taken,

The walking stick that transformed into a forest

   Must have adored Kuafu on his fatal journey.

 

Note: The last line uses the story of Kuafu, whose unsuccessful attempt to chase the sun cause his life, captured in a idiomatic phrase, "Kuafu chases the sun (夸父逐日)."  The walking stick he used on his journey of chasing the sun is dengzhang (鄧杖).  After the fatal effort to chase the sun, the walking stick was transformed into a forest, known as denglin (鄧林).
