〈威化島〉

 

聖祖興王地，今為樵牧場。

刀錐貪小利，騎射廢全長。

恩澤歸孤兒，風塵足犬羊。

廟堂真失榮，何數匹夫狂。

 

       注：威化島，位於鴨綠江江口之島嶼。李成桂，後日之朝鮮太祖，在威化島之回軍，於高麗至朝鮮之革命，有決定性影響。三句刀錐為貪小利，事出自《春秋左傳·昭公六年》：「錐刀之末，將盡爭之。」六句風塵為戰亂之意。《晉書·陶璜傳》：「夫風塵之變，出於非常。」

"위화도"

 

거룩한 조상께서 왕업을 일으키신 땅이

지금은 나무 하고 소 먹이는 곳입니다

 

칼이나 송곳 끝만큼 미미한 이익을 탐내

말 달리며 활 쏘기의 전체 길이를 폐지했습니다

 

은혜로운 혜택이 부모 없는 아이들에게 돌아가고

바람 속 티끌은 개와 양이 뒤집어 쓰면 충분할 텐데

 

종묘가 정말로 옛 영화를 잃었는데

어찌 이 평범한 사람의 혼란스러움을 헤아리겠습니까

 

     주: 위화도는 압록강 하구에 위치한 섬입니다. 훗날 조선의 태조가 된 이성계에 의한 위화도에서의 회군은 혁명 성공에 결정적 영향이 있었습니다.  세째 구절의 칼과 송곳의 끝이 사소한 이익을 탐한다는 뜻의 고사는 《좌전·소공6년》에 기록되어 있습니다.  여섯째 구절의 풍진, 즉 바람 속의 티끌은 문자 그대로의 뜻으로 쓰일 수도 있으나, 전란을 의미하는 경우가 많습니다.

"Wi-hwa Island"

 

A significant site of establishing the kingdom by the sagacious ancestor,

The island is now a place for collecting woods and herding cows.

 

Being covetous of trivial advantages,

The regular distance of archery on horseback has been given up.

 

Gracious benefits shall go to orphans,

Dust in the wind just for dogs and lambs will suffice.

 

With the royal shrine in dire circumstance, having lost its glory,

How can I measure the nonsensical troubles to this humble man?

 

       Note: Wi-hwa Island, located at the mouth of Amnok/Yalu River, was a historically significant site.  The retreat from there by Yi Sōng-gye, later the founding king of Chosōn, marked a decisive moment in the successful coup d'état that led to the establishment of the new dynasty. Line #3 is an abbreviated translation in which the reference to the tip of "knife and awl" is omitted.  It stands for desiring trivial profits.  "Dust in the wind" in Line #6 can be used in its literal meaning, but it often means chaos and sufferings caused by war.
