〈述懷示友人〉四首之一

 

少將雄釼倚長天，

謬算還為衆目憐。

凡骨詎宜金石藥，

虛名安用玉堂仙。

江湖未作龜魚主，

日月空催犬馬年。

也識君恩同覆載，

白頭無地謝陶甄。

 

               注：尾聯〈覆載〉，即天所覆與地所載，及〈陶甄〉，即陶工之轉輪，皆為帝王恩德、君王教化之比喻。

젊은 시절에는 보배로운 칼을 들고

      드넓은 하늘에 기대었습니다

여러 사람들의 눈에 그래도

      사랑스러울 것이라 잘못 생각했지요

 

보통사람의 그저 그런 몸에

      어떻게 불로 영약을 쓸 것이며

텅 빈 이름이

      홍문관 신선에 쓰일 수 있습니까

 

강에서도 호수에서도 아직

      거북이 고기괴물을 주재하지 못했고

해가 가고 달이 가면서 공연히

      개처럼 말처럼 지낸 세월만 재촉했지요

 

임금님의 은혜로

      같은 하늘 같은 땅에 있음을 알고

머리가 허옇게 센 이 몸이 황공한 마음으로

      주상의 가르치심에 감사드립니다

 

           주: 마지막 연의 〈복재覆載〉와 〈도견陶甄〉은 각각 "하늘이 덮고 땅이 싣는 것"과 "도자기 빚을 때 사용하는 물레"라는 뜻인데, 흔히 임금의 은덕이나 임금의 가르침을 비유하는 뜻으로 쓰입니다.

"Confiding in a Friend," First of Four Poems

 

In my youth, I held precious sword,

        And leaned on the vast skies.

I thought erroneously that I was,

        In the eyes of many people, still lovable.

 

How could the elixir of longevity be proper

        For an unremarkable body of a mediocre person?

Could a vacuous name be used

        For an academician at the Institute of Advancing Literature?

 

In rivers and lakes, I have yet

        To master over turtle-fish monsters.

The sun and the moon scurried

        In vain to let the slave-like years pass by.

 

I am mindful that the grace of my Lord

        Allows me to be under the same sky and on the same earth.

Overwhelmed with awe, this old man of white hair

        Expresses his gratitude for the guidance of His Majesty.
