寄呈

 

黃梅雨後綠槐風，月落西牕曙色空。

低首含情封錦字，停盃無語望青穹。

百聞一見何曾比，萬度千思未易通。

逆旅浮生猶努力，如君當作黑頭公。

（首句雨字，警修堂本作兩。疑誤。）

 

注：三句〈錦字〉，錦字書也，刺繡於錦之書札也，後為妻子寄呈丈夫之書之通稱。末句〈黑頭公〉謂二毛前任高位也。語出自《晉書》〈諸葛恢傳〉。

 

죽서 박씨

 

"당신께 올립니다"

 

매실 익는 계절 비가 지나고

         푸른 회화나무에 바람이  불면서

달 떨어진 서쪽 창가가

         새벽 빛으로 텅 비었습니다

 

고개를 숙이고 사랑을 담아

         비단 편지를 마무리하고

술잔을 멈춘 채 말 없이

         푸른 하늘을 바라봅니다

 

백 번 듣는 소식과 한 번 뵙는 만남을

         어찌 비교할 수 있나요

만 번 궁리하고 천 번 생각해도

         쉽게 이해할 수 없습니다

 

객사에 잠시 머무는 떠돌이 삶이라도

         노력을 해야겠지요

당신은 젊은 나이에

         재상이 되셔야 하니까요

 

주: 셋째 구절의 "비단에 수놓은 글자(錦字)"는 아내가 남편에게 쓰는 편지의 통칭입니다. 마지막 구절의 "검은 머리 높은 양반(黑頭公)"은 머리가 세기 전인 젊은 나이에 높은 지위에 오른 사람을 말합니다.

"Presented to You"

 

Rain in plum ripening season has ceased,

            Wind blows on the scholar tree,

And the window on the west after the moon set

            Is empty in the daybreak twilight.

 

Lowering my head, cherishing love,

            I seal a letter on brocade to you;

Putting aside the wine glass, without words,

            I look out to the blue sky.

 

Tidings I hear a hundred times and being together once—

            How could they even be compared?

Ten-thousand reasonings or a thousand ponderings

            Wouldn't make it easy to think through.

 

Though a floating life between traveler's inns,

            You must nonetheless do your best

For you are to rise to minister position

            While your hair is still black.

 

Note: "Words on brocade (錦字)" in the third line, often read as letter embroidered on brocade, means letter that wife sends to husband.  "Dark-haired minister (黑頭公)" in the last line means a young person who rises to high-level position at a young age before the hair turns grey.
