奉和雲臯

 

自是詩人半是愁，詩愁強半是清秋。

詩人何處論當世，今日空驚趙倚樓。

 

（末句〈趙倚樓〉指趙嘏，唐大和、大中年間人。其〈長安晚秋〉中「殘星數點雁橫塞，長笛一聲人倚樓。」為時人所賞，因而杜牧稱之為趙倚樓。）

"운고에게 삼가 화답합니다"

 

시인을 자처하면

   절반은 근심이고

시의 근심거리는 절반도 더

   맑은 가을입니다

 

어디에서 시인이

   세상일을 논의합니까

오늘 속절없이

   망루에 기댄 조시인에게 놀랍니다

 

역주: 마지막 구절의 "망루에 기댄 조시인(조의루)"은 당나라 시인 조하(趙嘏)를 지칭합니다. 9세기 전반의 시인으로 그가 지은 "장안의 늦 가을(長安晚秋)"이란 시의 "남은 별 몇 개 기러기와 함께 변경에 걸렸고, 긴 피리 소리 한 곡조가 나를 망루에 기대게 합니다(殘星數點雁橫塞，長笛一聲人倚樓)"라는 구절이 당시 회자되었다고 합니다. 그래서 시인 두목(杜牧, 803-852)이 그를 조의루, 즉 망루에 기대는 사람 조시인이라 불렀다고 합니다.

"Reverently Echoing Un'go"

 

To be a poet

   Is to fill half of oneself with worries.

Worries of poetry,

   More than a half come from clear autumn.

 

Where on earth a poet

   Deliberate on matters of the world?

Helplessly today

   I am startled by Zhao Yilou, the Leaner.

 

Translator's Note: Zhao Yilou in the last line refers to a Tang poet, Zhao Gu (趙嘏, first half of the 9th century).  A couplet in his "Late Autumn in Chang'an," "A few lingering stars are hanging on the frontier region with geese; A tune of long flute makes me lean on the tower (殘星數點雁橫塞，長笛一聲人倚樓)," was very popular.  Du Mu (杜牧, 803-852) appreciated the couple so much that he called the poet, Zhao Yilou, the Leaner.
