〈示島童並序〉

 

流水巖姜生，以余書數紙貼之壁上，其朝忽有虹見之異，若放光然，見者驚詑以爲筆精所發。是偶然有山谷間精氣所蓄洩，相感觸之。寧有紙面起虹之理。書此示島童輩以解之，五臺峨眉之佛燈，亦類是也。

 

李杜光芒未可追，

米家書畵詎同之。

偶然流水村家壁，

有此干霄射斗奇。

"섬아이들에게 보여준다: 서문과 함께"

 

유수암에 있는 강씨성의 학생이 내 글씨 몇 장을 벽에 붙였는데 그날 아침 별안간 무지개가 나타나는 기이한 일이 있었다고 한다. 빛을 발하는 듯했는데 본 사람이 놀란 듯 요란을 떨며 붓의 정신이 발산하는 것이라 생각했다고 한다. 그것은 우연히 산과 계곡의 정기가 쌓였다 흐르는 것을 보고 느꼈을 뿐이다. 어떻게 종이에서 무지개가 뜰 수 있겠나. 그래서 이 글을 지어 섬아이들에게 보이고 설명한다. 오대산이나 아미산의 부처도 모두 비슷한 일이다.

 

이백과 두보의 빛은

      쫓아가지 못했고

미불 집안의 글씨와 그림

      어찌 같아지려 하겠나

우연히 유수촌

      마을의 어느 집 벽에

이렇게 구름을 뚫고 올라

      북두칠성을 향하는 기이함이 있구나

 

           주: 서문에 소개한 일화는 황정견(黃庭堅, 1045-1105) 의 작품 "미불(米芾, 1051-1107)에게 재미삼아 드립니다"라는 시 두 수의 첫째에 보이는 다음과 같은 내용과 통합니다. "창강 고요한 밤에 무지개가 달을 뚫는 것을 보니, 분명 글씨와 그림을 실은 그대 집안의 배가 뜬 게 분명합니다."

"To Show to Kids on the Island: with Preface"

 

A student surnamed Kang in Flowing Water Cliff affixed a few sheets of my writing on the wall, and in one morning there appeared an uncanny rainbow, which seemed glowing brilliantly. Those who saw it were surprised and thought that it was the spirit of the brush pen shining.  It was simply the vitality of the mountains and valleys accumulated and released, which they encountered fortuitously. How could a rainbow rise from a paper? I write this to show to kids on the island and to explain it. The Buddha's lamps on Mountains Wutai and Emei are all of the similar kind.

 

The glory of Li Bai and Du Fu shining brilliantly,

        I was unable to chase it;

Calligraphic works and paintings of the Mi family,

        How dare I think of becoming equal to them?

Fortuitously, on the wall of a house

        In the Flowing Water Village,

Is this uncanniness piercing through the cloud

        And shooting up toward the Dipper.

 

               Note: The episode introduced in the preface may be related to the contents of the poem, "Jestingly Presented to Mi Fu (1051-1107)," by Huang Tingjian (1045-1105): "Looking at the rainbow piercing through the moon over the Blue River in this quiet night, I know for sure that a boat of your family is floating, loaded with writings and paintings."
