〈與夢得沽酒閑飲，且約後期〉

 

少時猶不憂生計，老後誰能惜酒錢。

共把十千沽一斗，相看七十欠三年。

閒徵雅令窮經史，醉聽清吟勝管弦。

更待菊黃家醖熟，共君一醉一陶然。

젊은 시절에도 생계를 어찌할지

      걱정하지 않았는데

나이 들고 나서 누가

      술값을 아끼려 할 수 있겠나

 

같이 돈 만 냥을 내

      술 한 말 시켜놓고

서로 바라보니 일흔에서

      삼 년이 빠질 뿐이네

 

한가히 고상한 술자리 노래를 찾아

      경전과 역사를 샅샅이 뒤지고

취해서는 맑은 노래소리를 듣는 게

      관현악기 연주보다 좋지

 

다시 국화가 노랗게 피고

      집에 담가둔 술 익기를 기다림세

자네와 함께면 취할 때마다

      기쁘고 걱정이 없어

"Buying and Drinking Wine with Mengde, and Scheduling the Next Gathering"

 

Not having worried for livelihood

        Even in youthful years;

Who would stint on money

        For drinking after having grown old?

 

We pay together ten-thousand coins

        To order a keg of wine;

And find that we are almost seventy,

        Only three years shy.

 

To search leisurely for elegant drinking songs,

        We reach every nook and corner of classics and histories;

Listening while feeling tipsy, chanting in pure voice

        Is preferable to music of wind and string instruments.

 

Let us meet again when yellow chrysanthemums bloom

        And the wine brewed at home is ready.

Every time I drink with you,

        I feel happy and merry.

 

               Note: Mengde is an alternative name of Liu Yuxi (劉禹錫, 772-842), who was born, obviously, in the same year as the poet.
