"May in the Next Life"

Mom by the brooklet, living on the octopuses she catches,

The pinchpenny never bought a single dress for herself,

Saying that pretty dress on tidal mud beach was an unfitting luxury.

She finds it hard these days even to lift her legs,

For the soul of all the octopuses she has caught are clinging to her,

But drags along her legs to go to the once-every-five-day market.

She snoops around clothes stores, and comes back with a small bundle,

Just like the day when she left home to get married off,

As if saying that she wants to be pretty like that—

A green jacket, a red skirt, and a matching headpiece as shroud,

Just a single set as that.

May her new life in the next life be nimble as that.

Note: "Green jacket and red skirt 綠衣紅裳," unlike in Chinese in which the phrase refers to particular species of chrysanthemum, means in Korean pretty dress worn by young women.  The color combination is commonly seen in the traditional dress for the bride. There used to be a practice of newly-wed bride wearing the dress until giving birth to the first baby.
