對打電話來向我問好的你

我說我沒事

也說向鳥問安也許更要緊

 

那是我讀到北美大陸在之前的五十年裏

減少了二十九億隻小鳥的報導的那一天

 

最後看到在屋簷下築巢的燕子

最後看到排隊棲歇在電線的麻雀是什麼時候

我都不記得了

 

小鳥在消失的期間裏

不是只有人類過著舒服日子嗎

不是過著過度舒服的日子的嗎

 

別說墳墓了，連一句生平記錄也沒留下

從地上消失的二十九億隻小鳥

正在變身做一隻巨大的凶鳥的風聞

到底誰在側耳傾聽呢

 

誰也不聞不問今天消失了幾隻鳥的

一天又近黃昏了

"How Birds Are"

 

To you who called me to inquire after me,

I said, I was fine,

But you might as well ask how birds were.

 

It was the day when I read a report that said

Birds were reduced by 2.9 billion in the last 50 years in north America.

 

I could not recall

When was the last time I saw swallows nesting under the eaves;

When I last saw sparrows perching in a queue on a telephone line.

 

During the time when birds were disappearing,

Could it be that only human beings lived comfortably?

Could it be that they lived too well?

 

The rumor that those 2.9 billion birds that disappeared

From the surface of the earth without a word, still less a burial site,

Are now getting transformed into a humongous ominous bird—

Who are listening attentively?

 

Another day when no one wonders how many birds

Have disappeared in that one day is coming to an end.

내 안부가 궁금했다며 전화 주신 당신께

나는 잘 지내고 있으니

새들의 안부를 대신 물어달라 했다

 

북미대륙에서 50년 동안 29억 마리의 새가 줄었다는

기사를 본 날이었다

 

처마 밑에 둥지 튼 제비를,

전기줄에 줄지어 앉아 있던 참새를 본 게 언제쯤인지

기억나지 않았다

 

새들이 사라지고 있는 동안

인간만 잘 지내고 있었던 게 아닐까?

지나치게 잘살고 있었던 게 아닐까?

 

무덤은커녕 한 줄 생애도 남기지 않고

지상에서 사라진 29억 마리의 새들이

한 마리 거대한 흉조로 변신 중이라는 소문을

누가 귀 기울여 듣고 있을까?

 

오늘 또 몇 마리의 새들이 사라졌을지

아무도 궁금해하지 않는 하루가 저물고 있다
