〈戲贈闡師〉

 

貝葉翻爲竹葉盃，

天花落盡眼花開。

醉鄕廣大人間窄，

誰識佯狂老萬回。

 

               詩人自注：師嘗赴內道塲，醉睡涕洟，為有司所斥。

               注：首句貝葉，即貝葉經，佛教初期刻在棕櫚樹葉之佛經。竹葉，即美酒竹葉青。二句天花，在佛學稱天上之妙花。尾句萬回，為唐朝和尚，小時能一日往返萬里，至安西見家兄，當日持書回，因稱萬回。醉酒佯狂之意象為後日所加，成為醉酒尚能一日來回萬里之和尚。

"장난삼아 스님께 드립니다"

 

넘기고 있는 불경의 책장에

      죽엽청 술잔이 보였으니

하늘의 꽃이 모두 떨어지고

      눈에 꽃이 피어 침침했나 봅니다

취한 세상은 드넓은데

      사람들 사이는 좁아 터졌으니

만회스님처럼 미친 척 하는 걸

      누가 알아볼 수 있겠습니다

 

           시인의 주: 큰 스님은 늘 안쪽 도량으로 오셔서 취해 잠드시고 눈물 콧물 다 흘리셔서 당직 스님께 야단을 맞으시곤 했다.

           주: 첫째 행의 패엽은 일종의 종려수 이파리를 말하는데, 초기 불교의 경전이 그 이파리에 기록되었기 때문에 불경을 뜻하는 어휘로 쓰이기도 합니다. 죽엽은 죽엽청으로 좋은 술입니다. 둘째 행의 천화天花, 즉 하늘의 꽃은 불교에서 하늘나라의 신묘한 꽃입니다. 마지막 행의 만회스님은 당나라 때 사람으로 어린시절 안서까지 만 리 길을 형을 만나기 위해 가고 돌아왔다 해서 붙여진 이름입니다. 술을 마시고 미친 척 하는 모습은 다른 스님의 이야기에서 나중에 첨가된 부분입니다. 술에 취해서도 만리를 다녀오는 만회스님의 모습은 그렇게 만들어 졌습니다.

"Jestingly Presented to a Reverend"

 

Gleams of bamboo leaf wine catch your eyes,

        As you turn the pages of palm-leaf sutras?

Heavenly blossoms must be raining and falling past,

        Leaving your vision blurred by flowers in the eye.

The realm of wine stretches vastly deep and wide,

        But the world of mortal beings is so cramped.

Who among us recognizes old Monk Wanhui,

        Masking himself in drunken madness?

 

               Poet's Note: Master reverend always comes to the study hall in the monastery, sleeps drunk, dripping snivel, and gets reprimanded by monks in charge.

               Note: Line #1 features a humorous juxtaposition of scriptures written on "palm leaves" and the wine named "bamboo leaves." Scriptures of early Buddhism were carved on a particular kind of palm tree leaves, and thus can refer generally to sutras. "Heavenly blossoms" in the second line are wondrous flowers in heaven. Stories have it that heavenly flowers rained down as Buddha preached. Wanhui/Man-hoe in the last line is a monk in the Tang Dynasty. The usage in this poem reflects the image that combines two unrelated sources. The monk in the Tang was named wanhui, "returning ten-thousand miles," because of the story of going in his childhood to his brother conscripted to the western frontier and coming back in one day. This is combined with the image of other monks who could drink much, producing the story of a monk capable of traveling ten-thousand miles after getting drunk.
