〈冬天夜晚〉

 

膝前展讀  一卷詩  字裏行間  踱來踱去

心神沉靜  夜漸深  耳畔忽而  嗡嗡長鳴

百里路  大步跨回來

急急推開  家前柴門

 

長夜漫漫  何以度  請來阿嬤  愛撿紅點

洗牌落牌  聲響交織  沙沙簌簌  如雨淅瀝

嘎吱吱  柴門忽然開

慌亂之中  急藏撲克

 

父親喀喀  乾咳聲  直向內房  漸漸消失

探手拿出  蘿蔔一根  抬頭正對  上弦半月

那夜晚  會再度回來

終究只是  長逝之風

"A Winter Night"

 

A poetry book rests open on my lap,

        and I drift quietly between the words and lines.

My quiet heart grows deep, so deep,

        until silence rings like an echo in my ears.

A hundred miles, I dash home in a few swift steps,

To fling wide our rustic wicker gate.

 

How do we pass these long, long winter nights?

        Playing flower cards is best.

I call grandma over and we sit face-to-face;

        The cards swish and snap, slapping the floor.

Creak, creak, thwack—the wicker gate makes a spooky rattle.

We scurry to hide the cards, and the game is disrupted.

 

My father slips away to the master's quarters,

        Clearing his throat with a dry cough.

The waxing half-moon catches my eye,

        as I pick up a radish for a snack.

A night like that—could it ever return to me?

It is gone, like a wind that blew away forever.

 

               Note: The original in Korean is written in a poetic form called shijo, in which the number of sentences and of syllables in them are the deciding factor of its rhythm. This translation attempts to preserve the formal feature, unavoidably resulting in clunkiness of translation in some parts.

고요가 깊어져 이명으로 연결되면

백릿길 한걸음 달려

삽짝문을 엽니다

 

긴 밤을 죽이기엔 화투가 제격이죠

할매캉 둘이 앉다 토닥토닥 토다닥

삐거덕 삽짝문 소리

화투판 엎어지고

 

아버지 헛기침이 안방으로 사라지면

무 하나 꺼내 들다 상현달과 눈 마주친

그 밤이 다시 올까요

영영 떠난 바람인데
