孩子，別讓狐狸谷那小塊稻田閒散沒事

那是你媽媽和我，在漫長的白晝裏忍著飢餓

頂著流血的手掌

用鋤頭鬆土開墾的稻田

 

風颳，雨落，雪下

花開，鳥鳴的痛苦歲月裏

我們守著那幾小塊稻田才活下來的

互相擁抱著哭，也不知是多少次了

 

我死了埋入地下前，可別讓它閒著

水溫低的那第二塊稻田，稻子怎麼樣了

第五塊稻田的正中央附近藏著巨石

務必當心犁刃

 

請你時常到田地去看看

莊稼，是聽著主人的腳步聲生長的

 

病了躺著都不能舉動，

眼睛一閉，就無比清晰地浮現在眼前的，父親的稻田

"Father's Rice Paddy – Rice Paddy #5"

 

Son, don't let the strip of rice paddy in Fox Valley sit idle.

It is a field that your mother and I carved out,

Enduring hunger for many long days, with blistered and bleeding palms,

As we loosened the heavy soil with our hoes.

 

Through howling gales, pouring rain, drifting snow,

Blooming flowers, and warbling birds,

We lived through years of bitter torments, making the field our home.

Many a time we wept, hugging each other.

 

Before I die and am laid in the dirt, never let it lie fallow.

On the second strip where the water is cold, how is the rice doing?

On the fifth strip, a big rock is buried somewhere in the middle.

Be careful not to chip the blade of your hoe.

 

You shall go out and tend to the field every now and then.

The crops grow when they hear their master's footsteps.

 

Sick in bed and unable to move at all,

Father closes his eyes, and sees his rice paddy.

얘야 여시골 논다랑이 묵히지 마라

니 어미하고 긴긴 해 허기를 참아가며

손바닥에 피가 나도록

괭이질해서 만든 논이다

 

바람 불고 비가 오고 눈이 오고

꽃이 피고 새가 울고

아픈 세월 논다랑이 집 삼아 살아왔다

서로 붙들고 울기도 많이 했었다

 

내 눈에 흙 들어가기 전에 묵히지 마라

둘째 다랑이 찬물받이 벼는 어떠냐

다섯째 다랑이 중간쯤 큰 돌 박혔다

부디 보습 날 조심하거라

 

자주자주 논밭에 가보아라

주인의 발소리 듣고 곡식들이 자라느니라

 

거동조차 못하시어 누워 계셔도

눈 감으면 환하게 떠오르는 아버지의 논
