〈慈護寺樓〉

 

早起獨登樓，悠然八月秋。

白煙橫野外，紅日上峯頭。

客路風霜冷，僧軒花木幽。

一尊開笑語，消遣利名愁。

"자호사 누각"

 

일찍 일어나 홀로 누각에 오르니

어느덧 여덟 번째 달이 뜬 가을입니다

 

흰 안개가 들녘 밖에 가로 걸렸고;

붉은 해가 산봉우리 위로 솟았습니다

 

나그네 가는 길 바람서리에 춥고;

스님들 창문이 꽃나무 속에 그윽합니다

 

불상 하나가 웃으며 말을 걸어

잇속과 명성을 위한 조바심을 떨치라고 합니다

 

           주: 마지막 연의 일존一尊을 "술 한 잔/병"으로 읽은 번역도 있습니다. 어휘의 뜻으로는 가능한 읽기입니다. 그러나 일찍 일어나 혼자 산사의 누각에 올랐다는 설정과 어울리지 않고, 홀로 올랐다면서 누구와 담소하며 술을 마셨다는 것인지도 이상합니다.

"A Tower at Temple of Merciful Protection"

 

I get up early and climb a tower alone,

It is already autumn of the eighth moon.

 

White mist hangs beyond the fields;

The red sun rises over the mountain peak.

 

The wayfarer's road is cold with wind and frost;

The monk's windows rest dark under flowering trees.

 

A Buddha statue tells me, with a smile,

To cast away my griefs over profit and fame.

 

               Note: Some read "il jon/yi zun一尊" in the last couplet as "a cup/bottle of wine." That is a possible reading of the word.  However, such a reading clashes with the poetic occasion of ascending alone a tower in a Buddhist temple early in the morning. Besides, the partner to "laugh and chat" with is absent as well.
