〈夏雲多奇峯〉

 

白日當天中，浮雲自作峰。

僧看疑有刹，鶴見恨無松。

電影樵童斧，雷聲隱士鐘。

誰云山不動，飛去夕陽風。

 

               注：據李奎報（1169-1241）《白雲小說》所錄傳聞，鄭知常獨坐忽聞詠「僧看疑有刹，鶴見恨無松。」詩句之聲，以為鬼物所告，後入試院，考官出〈夏雲多奇峯〉之題，知常續之成此詩。考官至頷聯，極稱警語，遂置之嵬級。李奎報評之曰：「僧看鶴見一聯雖佳，其他皆是穉髫語。何所取而至於去魁，未可知也。」六句或作「雷聲隱寺鐘。」

밝은 해가 하늘 가운데에 이르고

뜬 구름이 스스로 봉우리를 만드니

 

스님은 보면서 절이 있을까 살피고

학이 보고는 소나무가 없다고 아쉬워 합니다

 

번개 불빛은 나무하는 아이의 도끼질이고

우레 소리는 숨어사는 선비의 종소리입니다

 

누가 산이 움직이지 않는다 하나요

해질녘 바람에 날아가 버렸습니다

 

           주: 이규보(1169-1241)가 《백운소설》에 수록한 전하는 이야기에 의하면, 정지상이 홀로 앉아 있을 때 갑자기 "스님은 보면서 절이 있을까 살피고, 학이 보고는 소나무가 없다고 아쉬워 한다"는 구절을 읊는 소리를 듣고, 귀신이 해주는 것이라 생각했다고 합니다. 나중에 시험장에 들어갔을 때, 시험관이 "여름철 구름에 기이한 봉우리가 많다"라는 과제를 내자, 그 두 구절을 기억하고 계속해 써서 이 시를 완성했다고 합니다. 시험관은 둘째 연에 이르러 매우 놀라운 말이라고 칭찬하면서 장원에 올렸다고 합니다. 이규보는 이어서 "스님은… 학이…"의 둘째 연이 좋기는 하지만 나머지는 모두 머리 따 내린 어린아이의 말인데 왜 뽑아서 장원에 올렸는지 모를 일이다"라는 혹평을 붙였습니다. 여섯째 행은 "우레 소리는 숨어있는 절의 종소리이다"라고 기록한 판본도 있습니다.

Chōng Chi-sang (?-1135, cs. 1114)

 

"Many Wondrous Peaks in Summer Clouds"

 

The bright sun reaches the middle of the sky,

And floating clouds shape themselves into mountain peaks.

 

A monk beholds them, wondering if there is a monastery;

A crane repines, lamenting for missing pine trees.

 

Lightning flashes from a young woodcutter's ax;

Thunder rings with a hermit's bell.

 

Who says that mountains do not move?

They are blown away by the wind in the setting sun.

 

               Note: Yi Kyu-bo (1169-1241) recorded in the "Little Jottings by White Cloud," the following story circulating in his time: Chōng Chi-sang was sitting alone when he heard a couplet of a poem chanted, "A monk beholds them, wondering if there is a temple; a crane repines, lamenting for missing pine trees." He thought that it came from a spirit. Later, when he took an exam, the examiner presented the topic: "Many wondrous peaks in summer clouds." Chi-sang added on to the couplet to complete this poem.  The examiner found the second couplet to be startling, and placed the poem in the first place.  Yi Kyu-bo added the following harsh comment: "The couplet that reads, 'A monk…; a crane…,' is certainly good, but the rest sounds like words of a young child. I don't understand why it was praised so much and given the top honor."  An alternative version of the sixth line is recorded in some texts: "Thunder rings with the bell at a hidden temple."
