Two eyes

Lying on a desk—

 

Before getting tucked behind your ears,

I read the world around me with my own eyes.

I wonder about the texture of the desk, the lamp, and the pencil;

I ponder on the warmth of a poetry book, about half open.

 

I discuss the late autumn sunbeams,

And say hello to nightingales in the mountain ahead.

For just a very brief moment,

I am concerned about your insomnia,

And smile a fleeting smile.

 

Having taken you off for a change, I sense

A leisurely quietude like a nature lover deep in the mountains.

 

Your bookshelves are jam-packed with poetry books.

Several boards are sagging so much that they might collapse anytime.

On the floor are books piled up neatly,

Expanding in height and width.

 

You wrote that they were birds.

You said that they were red trees.

 

I hear your footsteps now.

I will briefly lose my focus,

And mimic your eyesight.

책상 위에 놓인
두 개의 눈

네 귀에 걸리기 전까지
나는 나의 눈으로 사물을 읽는다
책상과 스탠드, 연필의 질감을 더듬고
반쯤 펼쳐진 시집의 온기를 헤아린다

늦가을 햇살을 이야기하고
앞산 직박구리의 안부를 묻는다
아주 잠깐
네 불면을 걱정하며
작게 웃는다

모처럼 너를 벗은 나는
깊은 산 속 자연인처럼 한갓지다

네 책장에는 시집이 빽빽하다
어느 칸은 무너질 듯 휘어졌고
바닥엔 차곡차곡 쌓인 책들이
높이와 너비를 늘리고 있다

너는 그것을 새라고 썼다
너는 그것을 붉은 나무라고 썼다

네 발자국 소리가 들린다
나는 잠시 초점을 잃고
너의 눈빛을 흉내 낼 것이다
