〈題伽倻山讀書堂瀑布〉

 

狂奔疊石吼重巒，

人語難分咫尺間。

常恐是非聲到耳，

故敎流水盡籠山。

 

               注：《孤雲集》本，詩題作〈題伽倻山讀書堂〉，亦有以〈籠山亭〉、〈伽倻山紅流洞〉、〈題伽倻山讀書堂瀑布〉等標題之文本，今依詩境補瀑布二字。讀書堂相傳是詩人隱居之處，位於今伽倻山海印寺附近。《新增東國輿地勝覽》本，首句作「狂噴疊石吼重巒」。

"가야산 독서당의 폭포에 부쳐"

 

첩첩 바위 사이로 미친 듯 쏟아지고

      만 겹 산봉우리를 향해 으르렁거리니

사람들의 말은 바로 옆에서도

      들어 헤아리기 어렵습니다

시비를 따지는 소리가

      귓가에 이르는 게 늘 두려운 것인지

흐르는 물 소리에게

      온 산을 모두 뒤덮으라 합니다

 

           주: 《고운집》에는 시의 제목이 〈가야산 독서당에 부쳐〉로 수록되었습니다. 그러나 〈용산정〉、〈가야산 홍류동〉、〈가야산 독서당의 폭포에 부쳐〉라는 제목으로 수록한 판본도 있습니다. 여기서는 시흥을 일으키는 경지를 따라 "폭포"라는 두 글자를 보충합니다. 독서당은 최치원이 은거한 곳으로 알려져 있는데 지금의 가야산 해인사 부근에 있었다고 합니다.《신증동국여지승람》본에는 첫 행의 "奔 (달리다)"이 "噴 (뿜다, 세차게 흐르다)"으로 되어있습니다.

Ch'oe Ch'i-wōn (857 – 915)

 

"Inscribed on the Waterfall by the Reading Hall in the Kaya Mountain"

 

With water gushing through layers of rocks,

        Roaring between myriad peaks,

Words of human beings are hard to piece together,

        Even within a short distance.

Always being afraid that squabbles

        Of right and wrong might reach the ear,

It lets the sound of the water

        Completely enveloped the whole mountain.

 

        Notes: The Lonely Cloud, a personal anthology of the poet, lists this poem with the title, "Inscribed on the Reading Hall in the Kaya Mountain," but other collections and records show alternatives such as the "Pavilion in the Enveloped Mountain," "Red Stream Grove in the Kaya Mountain," and "Inscribed on the Waterfall by the Reading Hall in the Kaya Mountain." In consideration of the occasion of poetic inspiration of this poem, the word, "waterfall," is added to the title.  The Reading Hall is thought to be the place where the poet lived in seclusion.
