〈至日，獨坐偶吟〉

 

日至陽初動，天寒雪尙殘。

靜觀消長理，終夕閉重關。

 

홍주세 (자는 숙진, 호는 정허당, 1612-1661)

 

"동짓날 홀로 앉아 있다 우연히 읊습니다"

 

해가 가장 짧아져 양의 힘이 움직이기 시작하는데

하늘은 춥고 아직 눈도 남아 있습니다

조용히 앉아 줄고 느는 이치를 관찰하려고

저녁이 다 지나도록 겹겹 대문을 걸어 잠갔습니다

Daytime reaches the shortest, and the power of yang begins to move,

When the sky is cold and snow still remains.

To observe quietly the principles of decrease and increase,

I keep the layered gate shut tightly all through the night.
