〈詠竹〉

 

澤畔有孤竹，霜梢秀衆林。

斜陽雖無變，終不改清陰。

 

               注：《東國風雅》本題下有「為金清陰作」。《靜虛堂集》本有如下按語：「按丁丑年間，彼人至我國，問爾國有金斜陽者乎。有一宰答曰：『無金斜陽而有金時讓。』彼人曰：『此斥和主論者耶。』答曰：『此非斥和者，而有金尙憲者，是乃其人也。』盖字音彷彿訛傳之故。心有所感，覽物而寓意云。淸陰卽金相公號也。」金尙憲，字叔度，號清音，1570-1652.

"대나무를 노래함"

 

못가에 외롭게 자라는 대나무 한 그루

서리 내린 가지 끝이 수풀 전체에서 빼어납니다

해가 기울어도 변함이 없이

끝까지 맑은 그늘을 바꾸지 않습니다

 

           주: 《동국풍아》본에는 제목 아래 "'맑은 그늘'이라는 뜻의 김청음을 위해 짓다"라는 설명이 있습니다. 《정허당집》본에는 다음과 같은 설명의견이 있습니다. "정축년 (1637) 무렵, 외국사람들이 우리나라에 와서 당신의 나라에 '기우는 해'라는 뜻의 김사양金斜陽이라는 사람이 있느냐고 물었다. 재상 한 사람이 '기우는 해'라는 뜻의 김사양은 없고, '때맞춰 양보한다'는 뜻의 김시양金時讓은 있다고 대답했다. 외국사람들은 그 사람이 척화를 주장한 사람이냐 물으니, 재상은 그 사람은 척화를 주장한 사람이 아니고, 김상헌이라는 사람이 있는데 그게 그 사람이라고 대답했다. 글자의 소리가 비슷해서 잘못 전달된 까닭이다. 마음에 느끼는 것이 있어 사물을 보며 뜻을 담았다. '맑은 그늘清陰'이라는 청음이 바로 김상헌의 호이다." 김상헌, 자는 숙도, 호는 청음, 1570-1652.

"On a Bamboo Tree"

 

A lone bamboo tree stands by the marsh.

Frosted tips of its branches are excellent in the entire forest.

The sun may go down, but it would not change,

Keeping the clear shade as it has been.

 

               Note: The Tong-guk P'ung-a provides a short explanation under the title by saying that this poem was written for Kim Ch'ōng-ūm, literally, "clear shade." The Chōng-hō-tang chip, the poet's anthology, instead has the following explanatory opinion: "Around the year 1637, foreigners came to our country and asked if there was a person by the name of Kim Sa-yang (literally, slanting sun). A minister responded by saying, 'There is no one by that name, but there is a person by the name of Kim Shi-yang (literally, timely yielding).'  Foreigners asked if he was the one who denounced the peace talk.  The minister answered, 'He was not the one. It was Kim Sang-hōn who was critical of those who favored peace and amity.' This may have been caused because those names were near-homophones. This poem expresses the thoughts occurred in the heart stimulated by the affairs. Ch'ōng-ūm, 'clear shade,' is a sobriquet of Minister Kim Sang-hōn." Kim Sang-hōn's childhood name is Suk-to, sobriquet is Ch'ōng-ūm, 1570-1652.
