〈淒涼的一天*〉

 

那是尋常的串串狗

 

牠常在村莊裏遊蕩，吃飯時間到了

叫名字，牠就會衝出來

腳！說著伸出手

嗒！牠就把前腳放上來的，是蠻聰明的傢伙

父親喝醉酒回家時

往往一屁股坐在大門旁的狗舍前

跟狗狗談得很久

有一個冬天夜晚，父親抖掉狗狗背上的雪

居然把牠拉到臥房裏

讓牠像老朋友似地坐在前面

然後如故障的錄音機般反覆說了：「一切都沒有用。」

不覺到了那時父親的年齡

反問「什麼叫做活著？」之類一無所用的問題時

想起那個冬天夜晚醉酒的父親和看著那父親的

老狗那眼神就感到淒涼了

"A Gloomy Day*"

 

He was a common mongrel.

 

He gadded about all over the village, but when the meal time came

And we called his name, he would dash out like an arrow.

Foot!  On the hand stretched out with that command,

Plop! He would put the paw.  He was a fairly smart fella.

My father, on days when he came home smashed,

Would flop down before the kennel by the gate

And have a long talk with the dog.

On a winter night, He shook off the snow from the back of the dog,

And took him to the bed room.

Having let the dog sit before him like an old friend,

He repeated the same words like a broken tape recorder: "Everything is just futile."

Having reached the age of that father of mine before I realized,

When I'd ask back the futile questions such as, "What's life?"

I am reminded of the tipsy father of mine of that winter night, and the expression in

The dog's eyes that looked at the father, and that makes me feel gloomy.

"쓸쓸한 날*"

 

흔한 똥개였다

 

동네를 쏘다니다가도 밥때가 되어

제 이름을 부르면 쏜살같이 뛰어나오고

발! 하고 손을 내밀면

척! 앞발을 올리던 꽤 영리한 녀석이었다

아버지는 약주에 젖어 귀가하는 날이면

대문간 개집 앞에 주저앉아

개를 보고 오래도록 이야기하셨다

어느 겨울밤에는 개 등에 앉은 눈을 털어내며

안방까지 끌고 들어왔는데

오랜 친구처럼 앞에 앉혀 놓고는

'다 부질없다'는 말만 고장난 카세트처럼 반복하셨다

어느덧 아버지 나이에 다다라

삶이란? 이런 부질없는 반문反問을 할 때면

그 겨울밤 취한 아버지와 그 아버지를 바라보던

늙은 개의 눈빛이 생각나 쓸쓸해지는 것이다
