-       南原有春香，春川有全桂心

 

往年我作一牌妓女在昭陽亭

戲弄著白面兩班一起遊玩時

撇撇蘭，其香就越過徐徐嶺

撥撥琴，鶴降至歇山頂坐了

要知道我的舞步嗎

結了又解，解了又哄哄逗

把長裙裙襬稍稍提起

白粉蝶來坐在襪尖

千年歲月也只是假寐片刻

鳳儀山如我牙齦般退縮

昭陽江像老人尿流那樣變細小了

我來逛逛的風聞也許傳到市場了

到底哪一個情人破曉就起來直到飛檐

擦得乾淨潔白呢

 

               注：南原之春香與春川之全桂心，著名妓女，春香是《春香傳》裏虛構人物，全桂心，則為實際人物，朝鮮晚期之賣藝妓女，鳳儀山下有〈春妓桂心殉節之碑〉。朝鮮晚期之妓女，按照貞節分三類，〈一牌〉是最高層次，失身看作羞辱。第三行之純韓文地名，是韓國春川附近之山嶺，其名之意及其由來難以確定。今試譯成〈徐徐嶺〉，想像因其山勢只得徐徐步越也。鳳儀山、昭陽江皆為春川附近之地名。

"Having Ascended to Bright Sun Pavilion after Snow"

-       Cassia Heart of Ch'un-ch'ōn, as Spring Fragrance of Nam-won

 

In my prime years as the class one entertainer, when I was at Bright Sun Pavilion

Dallying with pale-faced noblemen,

As I drew orchid, the fragrance went over the Slow-walk Ridge,

When I plucked the zither, cranes came down and sat on the hip-and-gable roof.

Shall I talk about my dance moves?

I'd pause and let go, let go and cajole.

When I lifted the long skirt a bit

A cabbage butterfly would come and sit on the tip of my socks.

A thousand years of time is nothing but a catnap in early evening,

Phoenix Look Mountain has retreated like my gumline;

Bright Sun River is now reduced to a pee stream of an old man.

But the words of me stopping by might have reached the market place.

Which lover of mine woke up so early at dawn to wipe

So clean, so white all the way to the hip ridge?

 

               Notes: Spring Fragrance (Ch'un-hyang) of Nam-won and Cassia Heart (Chōn Kye-shim) of Ch'un-ch'ōn, are both entertaining women known for committing to fidelity. Spring Fragrance is a fictional character in the Story of Spring Fragrance, while Cassia Heart is a historical figure. A memorial stele for her remains in the Phoenix Look Mountain.  Entertaining women were classified into three groups according to their commitment to chastity. Class one was of the highest virtue, and many in this class were married.  Line #3 uses a place name in indigenous Korean, the meaning and the source of which are not easy to determine.  Slow-walk Ridge is a tentative attempt to translate it, focusing on the rugged topography that must have forced a slow walk. Phoenix Look Mountain (Pong-ūi-san) and Bright Sun River (So-yang-gang) are the names of places around Ch'un-ch'ōn, Korea.

-       남원에는 춘향이 춘천에는 전계심

 

내가 왕년에 일패기생으로 소양정에서

희멀건 양반들 희롱하며 놀 적에

난을 치면 향기가 느랏재를 넘어가고

가야금을 뜯으면 팔작지붕에 학이 내려앉았지

춤사위는 또 어떻고,

맺고 풀고 어르다

잘잘 끌리는 치맛단 들어 올리면

버선코에 배추나비가 내려앉았지

천년 세월도 초저녁 풋잠이라

봉의산은 잇몸처럼 내려앉고

소양강은 늙은이 오줌발처럼 가늘어졌는데

다녀간다는 소문 풍물장에 돌았든가

어느 임이 새벽부터 일어나 추녀마루까지

하얗게 닦아놓았는지
