我是來嚐嚐海螺的

説著喝杯酒，咀嚼幾下兒海螺肉

就發出嘆聲，好吃的海螺！我媽對這個客人說了

 

要嚐到辣椒味兒，必須記得數百個太陽

數百個月亮和數萬滴雨，然後

才能知道鬆鬆脆脆的辣椒味兒

要嚐嚐海螺的味道，先想想從馬羅島南端來的海流

和數十次海女忍到回水面時才發的呼吸哨聲

然後才能知道海螺的噴噴香味兒

 

為了知道阿姨的海螺味兒送盡歲月怎麼辦呢

 

有抓著海螺送盡歲月的人

當然也要有為了知道海螺味兒到達歲月盡頭的人

若有賣海螺養孩子送盡歲月的父母

就有為了知道父母的心願到達歲月盡頭的子女

今天你吃的海螺是快要看到歲月盡頭的

八十歲老海女抓到的

 

是我媽不瞟我一眼地

用能使屋頂搖擺晃動的大聲說的

"For Tasting Conches"

 

To a customer who said I came to taste conches,

Gulped down a drink, chewed conch a few times,

And exclaimed that it was delicious, my mom said,

 

For tasting chili peppers, one must think about

Hundreds of suns, hundreds of moons, and tens of thousands of raindrops,

And only then can know the crunch taste of chili pepper;

For tasting conches, musing on the currents from the southern end of Mara Island,

And the sound of recovery breathing, that has repeated dozens of times,

Shall be done before learning to enjoy the savory taste of conch.

 

What shall I do if my time and tide run out, learning the taste of your conch, Auntie?

 

There are those who use up their time catching conches,

And there should be those who use up their time learning the taste of conch;

If there are parents who reach the end of their time catching conches to bring up their children,

There should also be children who come to the end of their time understanding their parents.

The conches you're eating today were caught

By an eighty-year-old granny, the end of whose time is just around the corner.

 

Without leering at me, not even once,

She says in a voice loud enough to make to rooftop move up and down.

 

               Note: Mara Island is the southernmost island in Korea, south of Cheju Island.

"소라 맛 보려면"

 

소라 맛을 보러 왔다며

술 한 잔 먹고 소라 몇 번 씹고

소라 맛 좋네 하는 손님에게 엄마는 말했다

 

고추 맛을 보려면 수백 개의 해와

수백 개의 달과 수만 개의 빗방울을 생각한 다음에야

아삭한 고추 맛을 아는데

소라 맛을 보려면 마라도 끝에서부터 오는 물살과

수십 번의 숨비소리를 생각한 다음 먹어야

소라의 고소함을 알 수 있어요

 

아주메 소라 맛 알다가 세월 끝나면 어쩌요

 

소라 잡다 세월 끝나는 사람도 있으니

소라 맛 알다 세월 끝나는 사람도 있어야지요

소라 팔며 자식 키우다 세월 끝나는 부모가 있으면

부모 맘 알려고 세월 끝나는 자식도 있을 테고요

오늘 먹은 소라가 세월 끝 바라보는

여든 할머니가 잡은 소라예요

 

나를 힐끔 돌아보지 않고

해녀 식당 지붕 들썩이도록 큰 소리로 말한다
