손필대,"농부의 집 田家"

孫必大（字而遠，號歲寒齋，1599-？）

 

〈田家〉

 

日暮罷鋤歸，雉子迎門語。

東家不慎牛，齕盡溪邊黍。

 

               注：二句雉子或作稚子，但雉子亦造成有趣形象。

 

손필대 (자는 이원, 호는 세한재, 1599-?)

 

"농부의 집"

 

해가 기울어 괭이질 멈추고 돌아오니

새끼 까투리들이 문까지 마중나와 이야기하기를

주인집 정신줄 놓은 소들이

개울가 수수를 모두 씹어 먹었답니다

 

           주: 둘째 행의 "새끼 까투리 雉子"는 "어린 아들 稚子"로 적은 판본도 있습니다. 그러나 어린 새들이 만들어 내는 시적 형상도 이 작품의 정취에 잘 어울립니다.

"Farmer's Home"

 

I picked up the hoe and came home as the sun set.

Chicks came to the gate to greet me and said,

Landlord's cows lost their mind,

And chewed up all the sorghum by the brook.

 

               Note: "Chicks," in the second line, are "poults," young pheasants, to be precise. The word is written as "young son" in some versions. The two words are homophones and very close in their shape.  At any rate, the image created by the young birds fits the poetic occasion very well.
