"On the Seventh Night of the Seventh Moon"

A flow of brimful water

Has been causing heart-rending pain for thousands of years.

Only when there's no bitterness of separation in Heaven;

There'll be joy of being together among people.

The chant by the Herd Boy is fidgety;

The grudges of the Weaving Maid are elongated.

Crows and magpies may complete the bridge

But would that be enough to wipe away the tears?

               Note: The seventh day of the seventh moon is often compared to Valentine's Day in the West.  Two celestial figures in love with each other, Herd Boy and Weaving Maid, symbolized by two constellations separated by the Milky Way, are allowed to meet only one night a year. The seventh day of the seventh moon is the day, and crows and magpies assemble to become a bridge over the Milky Way, well, the Silver River, to make the reunion possible.
