〈甜點單含酒〉

 

西餐飲宴可愁人，

成帙菜單細細陳。

或燭或燈光不亮，

噫嘻字小出沉呻。

酒單繁雜尤難選，

半晌舉頭目似謓。

餐具叉刀排數對，

孰先孰後要留神。

收回碟碗還煩惱，

甜點單來如小考。

酥餅蛋糕一色甜，

布丁冰品能三好。

甜鹹自小不欣喜，

何況如今消渴老。

還好能尋列酒名，

不稱甜品稱為寶。

"디저트 메뉴에 술이 있어요"

 

서양음식으로 하는 연회는

      사람을 시름하게 합니다

책 한 권 될 만한 메뉴가

      미주알고주알 음식을 늘어놓습니다

촛불이건 등불이건

      빛이 밝지 않은데

이런! 글씨까지 작으니

      깊은 신음이 나오지요

와인리스트는 매우 복잡해서

      더욱 고르기 어렵습니다

한참을 들여다 보다 고개를 들면

      두 눈은 째려보는 듯한 모습입니다

식사 도구인 포크와 나이프를

      몇 세트 늘어 놓는데

무얼 먼저 무얼 나중에 쓰는 건지

      정신을 바싹 차려야 합니다

접시와 그릇을 거두어 간 후에도

      고민은 아직 더 있습니다

디저트 메뉴가 오는데

      마치 시험을 보는 듯한 기분입니다

과자나 케이크나

      하나같이 단 것 뿐이고

푸딩이나 아이스크림이나

      꼭 마음에 들 수가 있겠습니까

달고 짠 것은 어린 시절부터

      그리 즐기지 않았는데

게다가 지금은

      소갈을 앓게 된 노인입니다

그나마 다행은 디저트 메뉴에서도

      술이름을 찾아볼 수 있다는 것

달콤한 디저트라고 부르지 않고

      보물이라고 하겠습니다

"Drinks on Dessert Menu"

 

Wining and dining in Western cuisine

        Could be troublesome.

The menu, thick as a book,

         Is a garrulous list of food to be chosen from.

Lighted either by candles or by lamps,

        It is usually not bright enough,

And, alas, the tiny print

        Makes me groan.

Wine lists are so complicated

        That it is even more difficult to choose.

Lifting up my head after a long while,

        My eyes send out a displeased stare.

Tableware such as forks and knives

        Is arranged in multiple sets.

It takes extra caution to decide which ones

        To use first, and which ones to save for later.

When the dishes and bowls are taken away,

        We are still to be agonized.

The dessert menu is delivered

        Like a quiz to take.

Flaky pastries and cakes

        Are without exception too sweet.

Can puddings and ice creams

        Be good in all aspects?

From my childhood, I haven't been

        A fan of the sweet and the salty.

Besides, I have now become

        A diabetic old man.

Thank goodness, I could look for

        Drinks listed on the dessert menu.

Instead of calling them sweet dessert,

        I would call them treasures.
