百果百中齊薦新，

農忙不忘慰亡親。

洗鋤醉飽無他日，

直至旻天祭穀神。

"중원절"

 

온갖 과일 풍성한 백중날

      모두 싱싱하게 제사상에 올리고

농사일 바빠도 돌아가신 부모님

      위로하는 제사를 잊지 않습니다

호미를 닦아 내려놓고

      한껏 취하고 배불리 먹는 날은

곡식의 신에게 제사드릴

      가을까지 이 날 하루 뿐입니다

 

           주: 중원절은 음력으로 일곱번째 보름날입니다. 불교와 도교에서 모두 지내는 축제일이라서 관계된 습속도 많습니다. 우리나라에서는 조상을 위한 제사를 올리고, 농사일을 하는 일꾼들을 잘 먹이고 잘 쉬게 하는 날입니다. 이 두 가지가 모두 농사일이 한참 바쁜 때에 일어나는 일이니 특별히 의미가 있어 보입니다.

"Spirit Day on the Seventh Full Moon"

 

On the Spirit Day with all the fruits

        Offered afresh on the sacrificial altar—

Busy farming work does not allow us

        To be oblivious of consoling deceased parents.

There is no other day that we clean and set aside the hoes

        And eat and drink our fill,

Until we offer sacrifice

        To the god of grains under the autumn sky.

 

               Note: Zhongyuan, literally "middle foundation day," translated here as "Spirit Day," is the seventh full moon of the year.  One of the activities associated with the day is offering sacrifice to ancestors, and thus often translated as "Ghost Festival."  It is a festivity celebrated by both Buddhism and Taoism, making a wide range of activities associated with the festive day.  In Korea, two traditions are notable.  First, offering sacrifice with a "hundred fresh fruits" mature by the time.  Second, workers on the farm, including household servants, are given a day off.  They clean the hoes to set them aside, drink and eat till they feel content.  Both are done despite the fact that farming work is reaching its climax.
