〈拱北樓君臣相悅〉

 

觀風知偃草，

憂國誡苞桑。

會有河清日，

君臣共一堂。

 

       注：韓國稱作拱北樓之樓閣在數處。此詩題所指為清州拱北樓，已消失，其正確位置不得確知。現傳最早記錄是恭愍王11年（1361）事。避紅巾之亂，王蒙塵至安東，歸首都開京路上停留於清州五月餘，因推斷此詩作於清州拱北樓。首句用《論語·顏淵》：「君子之德風，小人之德草，草上之風，必偃。」二句用《周易》否卦九五：「大人吉，其亡其亡，繫於苞桑。」大人當耿耿思危，使國鞏固，即吉。

바람을 보면 풀이 눕는 것을 아시고

나라 걱정을 뽕나무 뿌리에서 깨우치셨지요

강물이 맑아지고 임금과 신하가

함께 모일 날이 있을 것입니다

 

           주: 우리나라에 공북루라고 불리는 누각은 몇 군데 있습니다. 이 시의 제목에 보이는 것은 청주의 공북루로 추정합니다. 청주의 이 공북루는 이미 소실되어 정확한 위치를 확인할 수 없습니다. 전해지는 가장 오래된 기록은 공민왕11년(1361) 때의 이야기입니다. 홍건적의 난을 피해 공민왕이 안동으로 몽진했다가 돌아가는 길에 청주에 다섯 달 남짓 머물었을 때 공북루에서 모였다고 합니다. 첫 구절은 《논어·안연》편, "윗사람의 덕은 바람이고 아랫사람의 덕은 풀이다. 아랫사람은 바람을 받들어 반드시 눕는다"는 말씀을 담았습니다. 둘째 구절은 《주역》비(否)괘 구오효의 효사를 이용합니다. "큰 사람에게 길하다. 위태위태하구나. 뽕나무 뿌리에 묶어야지."

"The Sovereign and His Subjects Are Delighted Together in Northward Salutation Pavilion"

 

Seeing wind is to know that grass would lie down.

Concerns for the kingdom are instructed by mulberry roots.

There will be a day that the river would clear up,

And the sovereign and his subjects could gather together.

 

               Note: There are several buildings named Kong-buk Tower, literally "Northward Salutation," in Korea.  The one named in the title of this poem is likely to have been in Ch'ōng-ju. The tower is no longer standing, and the actual location is not possible to determine.  The earliest record extant goes back to 1361, the 11th year of the reign of King Kong-min. The king fled to An-dong during the Red-turban rebellion, and on his way back to the capital, he stayed in Ch'ōng-ju for about five months, and there were gatherings in the tower. Line #1 uses the phrase in the Analects: "The power of the ruler is that of wind; the power of the subject, that of grass. The grass acknowledges the wind above and lies down." (12:19). Line #2 uses the idea in the statement attached to the yang-line on the fifth position in the Pi (否)-graph, in the Yijing: "Auspicious for great person. Will it be lost? Will it be lost? Tie it to mulberry roots." This line may be read as an instruction to be constantly concerned about the state.
