一大早就去圍著村莊附近的小路

撿栗子回來的老奶奶

用小刀削皮

把它放進孩子們的嘴裏

崽子大了還是崽子

媽媽老了還是媽媽

已過三十的兩個傢伙

一動也不動地

只顧輪流大開嘴巴領栗子吃

春天在屋簷下面看到的燕崽子大口

和叼著小蟲回來的母燕子

天啊！那樣人那麼大的

燕子啊

"A Swallow Family"

 

An old granny who went out early in the morning

To the path around the village to collect chestnuts

Peels them with a small knife

And put them in the mouths of her kids.

Kids are kids, even after they grow up;

A mother is a mother, even when she grows old.

Two fellas well past thirty

Don't even lift a finger

And open their mouths big in turn to take the chestnuts to eat.

The nestlings' big mouths I saw in spring under the eaves

And the mother swallow which came back holding worms in the mouth—

My Lord! Swallows

As big as people like that!

마을 근처로 난 둘레길에 나가

아침 일찍 알밤을 주워 온 노인네가

작은 칼로 밤을 깎아

애들 입에 넣어 주고 있었다

새끼는 커도 새끼

어미는 늙어도 어미

서른 넘은 두 녀석

손 하나 까딱 않고

입 딱딱 벌려 차례로 밤을 받아먹는다

봄에 처마 밑에서 본 제비 새끼들 큰 입과

벌레를 물고 온 어미 제비

세상에 저렇게 사람만 한

제비들이라니
