Crossing through the empty air,

 

Was it feeling sad, feeling cheerful,

Or just was without any particular emotion?

 

Was the way my mother went all alone

Tranquil as the red flower petals?

 

Flowers do not just fall.

It is that they no longer wanted to hang on.

It is that they no longer wanted to wrestle.

 

Looking at red flower petals fallen to the ground,

People say, beautiful, disheartening,

Some in admiration, and others in grief,

 

But flowers, even when they wither, remain

Silent.

한 송이 꽃이 떨어지기를 결심할 때

허공을 건너

바닥으로 내려앉기를 결심할 때

 

그는 슬펐을까 기뻤을까

아니면 그저 덤덤했을까

 

어머니 홀로 가신 길 또한

붉은 꽃잎처럼 고요했을까

 

꽃은 그냥 지지 않는다

더는 매달리기 싫었던 것이다

더는 씨름하기 싫었던 것이다

 

바닥에 떨어진 붉은 꽃잎을 보며

사람들은 아름답다 쓸쓸하다

경탄조로 혹은 비탄조로 말하지만

 

꽃은 질 때조차

침묵한다
