In spring of a year,

I boarded a train,

Rushed forward like a river,

Only to miss Ok-ch'ōn where I was scheduled to get off, and ended up going to Yōng-dong.

And in the boys playing basketball in the backyard of a small factory.

 

The chores I was supposed to do in Ok-ch'ōn may have been left undone, but when else would I get to go to Yōng-dong, and, as a matter of fact, even if I got off in a place as far down as Kim-ch'ōn, could that be a big deal to speak of?

 

In spring of a year,

I took a train,

Traveled like a wayfarer, and before I knew,

I was enchanted by the hubbub of bamboo forest in the southern region

And by the wind from the river swishing through the fields,

And got off at Yōng-dong, though I was supposed to go to Ok-ch'ōn,

But except for the train and myself, there was no one else who knew that.

제가 기차를 타고

나그네처럼 가다가 그만

남도의 수런거리는 대숲과

들판을 내달리는 강바람에 홀려

옥천을 간다는 게 영동에서 내렸지만

기차와 나 말고는 아무도 그걸 아는 이가 없었습니다
