"At Kim Yu-jōng Station: Reverently Proposing a Toast"

Having fallen in love with Yu-jōng, I used to live in the Steamer Village.

Sitting under an elm tree on the former site of the night school,

Reading the story of Yu-jōng's life carved on the memorial stele,

I had soju without any food to nibble.

There were times when I wished to be pious just about being alive,

But I had no money, no job, no fatherland, no religious faith.

In a spring night when the last uptrain had already departed,

I hoped for a premature death.

But I wasn't a genius,

And all that I could do

Was to propose reverently a toast

To the genius who died prematurely.

That happened during the Fifth Republic.

Notes: Kim Yu-jōng (1908-1937), a modern Korean writer, devoted also to the enlightenment of farmers. He helped establish a night school for poor children.  "Steamer Village" is my translation of Sa-le Ma-ūl, the location of his farmland activities. The Fifth Republic is a period in the history of modern South Korea, 1981-1988, established by a coup d'état, and known for autocratic rule by military generals.
