我聽到風中傳聞

在某一處有

人們出生時是老人，漸漸年青，

去世時是紅撲撲的嬰兒的國家

 

收拾著餘生

我要禱告

 

祈願出生就做擺在臘魚店的乾魚

被扔回海裏

游一游既深又青的一生

到幼魚到魚卵越活越小

在降到水面下的

光綫裏消滅

 

從候鳥超過萬里的最後一程飛行

到達作喙子尚黃的幼鳥

如能作凍原上鳥卵了事

 

以街道上滾動的落葉為始

經過霹雷閃響中丟了一枝胳膊的古木

再經過站在鬱鬱森林中的年青樹木

然後小野獸舌前的芽苗

再然後作爲冬眠的橡實

 

得到善終吧

"A Plainsong"

 

I heard from the grapevine,

Somewhere out there is a country

Where people are born very old and get younger and younger,

And leave the world as a rosy infant.

 

Finishing up the remaining life,

I shall pray:

 

To come into being as dried fish displayed at a dried fish store,

To be thrown back to the sea,

To swim a life, deep and blue,

To continue to get younger to become a fingerling, an egg,

And to reach extinction in the light

Coming down under the surface of the water,

 

If I can be a migrating bird arriving from the last flight

Of thousands of miles, as a chick with a yellow beak,

And be done as an egg on a tundra,

 

To start as a tattered leaf rolling on the street,

To stand as an old tree which lost a limb to a lightning,

And as a young tree in lush woods,

To become a sprout before the tongue of a small animal,

And as an acorn for winter hibernation,

 

I will die a good death.

어느 곳인가에
노인으로 태어나 점점 젊어지다가
바알간 아기로 세상을 뜨는 사람들
그런 나라가 있다는 풍문을 들었네

여생을 마무리하며
기도하리라

건어물전에 널린 마른 생선으로 생겨나
바다에 도로 던져져
깊고 푸른 삶을 헤엄치다
치어로 알로 점점 어려져
수면 아래 내려온
빛 속에서 소멸하기를

만 리가 넘는 철새의 마지막 비행에서
부리 노란 아기새로 도착하여
툰드라의 알로 끝날 수 있다면

길에 구르는 낡은 낙엽으로 시작하여
벼락에 한 팔을 잃는 고목과
울울한 숲의 젊은 나무로 서 있다가
작은 짐승 혀 앞의 순과
겨울잠을 위한 도토리로
