鄭墧（字仲喬，號進菴，1799-1879）

 

〈新居〉

 

晩年鳩拙闢新居，

結得先人舊宅墟。

愴感梓桑餘歲月，

寬閒琴几整衣裾。

楣容遠墅頻來燕，

門對淸溪自樂魚。

澹泊生涯無所事，

殘暉付與一床書。

 

               注：首句〈鳩拙〉一詞，出自《禽經》：「鳩拙而安」，鳲鳩之謂也。《方言》說鳲鳩曰：「蜀謂之拙鳥，不善營巢，取鳥巢居之，雖拙而安處也。」鳩居鵲巢之事，早見於《詩經·召南》〈鵲巢〉。

"새 거처"

 

둥지도 못 트는 서툰 멧비둘기 같은 내가

      늘그막에 새 거처를 마련했습니다

조상의 옛 집터에

      얼기설기 엮어 세운 것이지요

 

고향 땅 가래나무 뽕나무를 슬피 그리며

      남은 세월을 보내기 보다

가야금 받침도 넉넉히 넓은 곳에서

      옷깃을 매만집니다

 

처마는 멀리 집까지

      늘 날아오는 제비를 머무르게 하고

대문은 맑은 시내에서

      스스로 즐거워하는 물고기를 마주봅니다

 

평생을 덤덤하게 살면서

      한 일도 별로 없지만

기울어가는 햇빛이

      책상 가득한 책을 내리 비칩니다

 

           주: 첫 행의 〈구졸鳩拙〉은 《금경禽經》의 "비둘기는 서툴지만 편안하다"는 말에서 나왔습니다. 여기서 비둘기는 멧비둘기를 말하는데, 이 새에 대해 《방언方言》이라는 책은 다음과 같이 설명합니다: "촉지방에서는 서툰 새라고 하는데, 둥지를 잘 만들지 못한다. 다른 새들의 둥지를 차지하기 때문에 서툴지만 편안하게 지낸다." 비둘기가 까치둥지에 산다는 말은 《시경詩經·소남召南》〈작소鵲巢〉편에 이미 보입니다.

"A New Abode"

 

As clumsy as turtledoves which cannot even build

        Their own nests, I have a new abode.

I put it up on the site

        Of my ancestors' old residence.

 

Instead of sorrowfully remembering catalpa and mulberry trees

        In the time remaining for me;

In the space generous even for the zither stand,

        I straighten my clothes.

 

The eves put up swallows visiting frequently

        My abode quite faraway;

The gate faces fish entertaining themselves

        In the clear brook.

 

I have been indifferent to fame and fortune

        All my life with no notable achievements,

But the remaining glow shines on

        The books that fill the desk.

 

               Note: The story of turtledove in the first line comes from the Classic of Birds (Qinjing), which says, "Doves are clumsy, but live in comfort." Doves here stand for turtledoves, for which the Local Languages (Fangyan) offers the following explanation: "They are called 'clumsy birds' in the Shu region. They are not skilled in building nests, and they take other birds' nests. Thus, though clumsy, they live comfortably." The story of doves taking up magpie's nest is already shown in the Shijing (Book of Poetry).
