이준,"매화에게 묻습니다 問梅花"와 "매화가 대답합니다 梅花答"

〈問梅花〉

 

貞心絶色品題難，

槪是篔簹伯仲間。

宜與堯蓂同玉砌，

如何憔悴老空山。

 

               注：三句〈堯蓂〉即蓂莢，相傳為帝堯階邊之瑞草，月朔始日結一莢，至月滿始日落一莢，月晦而盡，故亦稱曆草。

 

〈梅花答〉

 

同心同臭固應難，

寂寞何妨老此間。

惟有夢魂頻化鶴，

夜深和月到蓬山。

"매화에게 묻습니다"

 

곧은 마음과 절세의 아름다움은

      평가해 자리 매기기 어렵지만

대체로 운당 왕대나무와

      형님아우님 사이이겠습니다

요임금 시절 명협풀과

      함께 옥계단에 있어야 하는데

어찌해서 빈 산에서

      초췌하게 늙어가나요

 

           주: 세째 행의 명협풀은 요임금의 계단 옆에 있었다는 상서로운 풀입니다. 초하루부터 하루에 꼬투리를 하나씩 맺고 보름날부터는 하루에 꼬투리가 하나씩 떨어져 그믐에는 마지막 꼬투리가 떨어졌다고 합니다. 그래서 책력풀, 달력풀이라 불리기도 합니다.

 

"매화가 대답합니다"

 

마음도 같고 향내도 같기는

      물론 어려울 수밖에 없으니

말없이 외롭게 이곳에서

      늙으면 또 어떻습니까

단지 한 가지, 꿈속에선 내 혼이

      종종 학으로 변해서

깊은 밤 달과 함께

      봉래산으로 갑니다

"A Question to the Plum Tree"

 

The upright heart and the matchless beauty

        Make it hard to evaluate and rank you,

But roughly you are right up there

        With the tall Yundang bamboos.

It'd be proper for you to be by the jade stairs

        Together with the auspicious calendar plant of King Yao,

But why are you looking wasted

        And getting old in this empty mountain?

 

               Note: Translated in line #3 as "calendar plant" is the "mingjia of Yao," a legendary plant at the time of King Yao. It is an auspicious plant in King Yao's palace, which developed a pod a day from the first day of the moon until it had fifteen pods at the time of full moon.  From the sixteenth of the moon, it would drop a pod a day, until all fifteen are dropped at the end of the moon.  This is why the plant is also known as the calendar plant.

 

"Plum Tree's Response"

 

To be in the same mind and the same scent

        Is, needless to say, hard.

What would make it wrong to be in this place,

        Growing old, lonely and without words?

But I'd say that my soul

        Often transforms into a crane in my dream,

And goes to the Penglai Mountain

        With the moon in the depths of the night.
