〈睡軒〉

 

長日縣齋靜，太守但事睡。

睡起時擧眼，滿眼無非睡。

通引案前睡，及昌軒下睡。

我睡猶自可，若曹焉敢睡。

呼吏使之笞，吏亦門外睡。

一笑無奈何，笑罷還復睡。

何幸官無事，上下得同睡。

從今日復日，我睡爾亦睡。

推而一境內，煕煕都是睡。

援筆書諸軒，軒名宜以睡。

 

이철보 (자는 보숙, 호는 지암, 1691-1775)

 

"잠자는 동헌"

 

긴긴날 고을관아 집무실이 조용한 건

태수인 내가 하는 일이 오로지 잠

잠에서 깨어 눈을 뜨고 둘러보니

눈에 가득 들어오는 건 모두들 잠

사환으로 부리는 아전은 책상 앞에서 잠

명령 하달하는 아전은 동헌 아래서 잠

내가 자는 것은 그럴 수 있지만

네놈들이 어찌 감히 잠

아전을 불러 곤장을 치라고 하니

그 아전도 문밖에서 잠

웃고 넘길 수 밖에 없으니

웃고 나서 또 다시 잠

관아에 일이 없으니 얼마나 다행인가

윗사람 아랫사람 함께 잠

지금부터는 하루 또 하루

나도 잠 너희들도 잠

이걸 온 나라에 두루 펼치면

모두가 기꺼이 잠

붓을 들어 동헌에 써 붙이니

동헌의 이름으로 적당한 잠

"The Sleeping County Office"

 

The county government office is quiet

For, as the chief, I care only about sleeping.

Waking up from my sleep, I look around,

Only to find that there's nothing not sleeping.

The attendant sleeps at the desk;

The announcer is under the office, sleeping.

For me to sleep shall be okay,

But how could you guys dare to be sleeping?

I call an officer to have them flogged,

But he is outside of the door, also sleeping.

What can I do other than laughing?

After a laugh, I go back to sleeping.

Fortunate indeed is the government having nothing to attend to,

Allowing those above and those below all be sleeping.

From now on, day after day,

I sleep, and you shall also be sleeping.

If this is extended to all the territory within the borders,

Everyone can, gladly and willingly, be sleeping.

I grab my brush pen to write for the government office,

Appropriately naming it, sleeping.
