강규환,"스스로를 일깨웁니다 自警"

姜奎煥（字長文，號賁需齋、存齋，1697-1731）

 

〈自警〉

 

半世窮經志聖門，

口戎心冦未醒昏。

聡明反作蟊眞賊，

愧負先生敎鈍根。

 

               自注：先生前有書曰：「君才明性敏，透得文字容易，故未免有看義理麁率之病。從今須作鈍根工夫至望。」故云。

               注：尾句及詩人自注之〈先生〉或許是韓元震（字德昭，號南塘，諡號文純，1682-1751）。其《南塘集》有〈與姜甥〉、〈答姜甥〉等與詩人之書札二十餘件，但未見詩人自注所引之數句。

"스스로를 일깨웁니다"

 

일생 절반 동안 경전을 끝까지 공부해

      성인의 문하에 들려 뜻을 세웠지만

오랑캐 같은 입, 도둑 같은 마음은

      어둠에서 깨어나지 못했습니다

똑똑하다는 게 오히려

      사실은 해충이었으니

부끄럽게도 선생님께 부담을 드려

      우둔함의 가르침을 주시게 했네요

 

           시인의 주: 선생님은 전에 이런 편지를 주셨습니다.  "그대는 재주가 밝고 성정이 영민하며, 문자를 쉽게 꿰뚫어 보네. 그래서 뜻과 이치를 보는데 거칠고 가벼운 문제를 면하지 못하네. 지금부터는 반드시 우둔해지는 데 힘을 쓰기 바라네." 그래서 이 시를 씁니다.

           주: 마지막 행과 시인의 주에서 이야기하는 "선생님"은 외삼촌인 한원진 (자는 덕소, 호는 남당, 시호는 문순, 1682-1751)인 듯합니다. 그의 문집에는 생질이 시인에게 보낸 서찰 이십 여 건이 실려 있습니다. 그러나 시인의 주에 인용된 문구는 찾지 못했습니다.

"I Shall Be Watchful"

 

I have devoted half of my life to study thoroughly the classics

        To enter the school of sages,

But I haven't been able to awaken from darkness

        My barbaric mouth and the heart of banditry in me.

To be smart, on the contrary to common perception,

        Could be real vermin.

To my shame, I have burdened my master

        To teach me the lesson of dull-wittedness.

 

               Poet's Note: Master sent to me earlier a letter to this effect: "You are bright and smart in your talent and disposition, and you can easily penetrate into the meaning of words. As a result, you suffer unavoidably the problems of being rough and frivolous in understanding the meaning and the principle. I hope you make effort from now on to become dull-witted." Thus, I write this poem.

               Note: The master mentioned in the last line and poet's note is likely to be Han Won-jin (1682-1751), his maternal uncle.  The collection of Han's work contains some twenty letters sent to the poet.  However, I was unable to find the wording quoted in poet's note.
