北坪集市那天被綁在牛市的那老牛拉著牛樁子到哪兒去了呢？

 

湫岩前海的鹽川裏浮來浮去的白鴨一家是如今藏在哪裏用濕翅膀互相抱住的呢？

 

被車撞死躺在望祥收費站路邊的母麅子

那小小麅崽子

踩著那死屍平安無事地到達了兄弟峰山麓了嗎？

 

武陵溪谷的散步路

甘棠樹下急匆匆爬行的紅松鼠

抖掉雨水爬進了哪個洞裏呢？

 

孟芳海灘的油菜黃花

是夏季擦去的嗎？還是是雨擦掉的呢？

 

那時候的暈紅夕霞和粉紅馬鞍藤

沉到大海的哪裏都不能回來的呢？

 

雨下著⋯⋯

 

圓溜溜的那些問號

想知道自己的存在

用頭一再再三地牴撞著玻璃窗。

 

               注：北坪、湫岩、望祥、兄弟峰、武陵溪谷、孟芳等，皆為韓國東海岸東海市周圍之地名。孟芳一名，是由〈埋香坊〉音變過來的。

"What I Wonder about on a Rainy Day"

 

That old bull tethered at the cattle fair on the Puk-p'yōng market day—where did he go, pulling the bull stake?

 

That family of white ducks floating on a salty stream in the sea by the Ch'u-am Rocks—where do they hide in now and hug each other with their wet wings?

 

Treading on the corpse of mother roe deer, hit by a car and lying dead on the roadside near Mang-sang Tollgate,

Did that tiny kid

Reach the mountain under the Brother Peaks safely?

 

The red squirrel, scurrying under a birchleaf pear tree

On the walking trail along the Mu-rūng Valley—

Which hole did it go into, shaking off the rainwater?

 

Which was it that erased the yellow flowers of cole

At the Maeng-bang Beach, summer or rain?

 

The red evening glow and the pink beach morning glory of those days—

Where in the sea have they sunk and are unable to return?

 

It's raining……

 

The round-shaped question marks,

Wishing to know about their existence,

Are butting the glass window with the head, time and again.

 

               Note: Proper nouns in this poem are places around Tonghai-shi, a city on the east coast of Korean peninsula.

북평 장날 우시장에 묶여있던 늙은 소는 쇠말뚝을 끌고 어디로 갔을까?

 

추암 앞바다 염천에 떠돌던 하얀 오리 가족들은 지금쯤 어디에 숨어 젖은 날개로 서로를 덮어주고 있을까?

 

망상 톨게이트 도로변, 차에 치여 죽어자빠진 어미의 주검을 밟고

형제봉 기슭까지 무사히 도착했을까?

그 작은 새끼 고라니

 

무릉 계곡 산책길

팥배나무 아래 종종거리던 청설모는

어느 구멍으로 비를 털고 들어갔을까?

 

맹방해수욕장 노란 유채는

여름이 지웠을까? 비가 지웠을까?

 

그 시절 붉은 노을과 분홍 갯메꽃은

바다 어디쯤 빠져서 돌아오지 못하는 걸까?

 

비 오는데.......

 

동그란 물음표들은

제 존재를 알고 싶어서

자꾸만 대가리로 유리창을 치받는데.
