〈歲末思先母〉

 

四十六加四十六，

未知天命能瞑目。

如今遐想九旬娘，

善美當先廿八宿。

반빈

 

"세모에 먼저 가신 어머니를 생각합니다"

 

사십 육 년에

         또 사십 육 년이 더해집니다.

하늘의 명을 아는 나이가 되기도 전에

         눈을 감으실 수 있으셨나요

 

지금 아득히 멀리

         구순의 어머니를 상상해 봅니다

좋으심과 아름다우심에서 물론

         온 하늘 스물여덟 별자리에서 제일이시지요

On forty-six years,

            Forty-six more years have been added.

Could you close your eyes

            Before reaching the age of knowing heaven's decree?

 

Now I gaze into the distance

            Imagining my ninety-something mother.

You must of course lead the twenty-eight constellations

            In goodness as well as in beauty.
