我丈夫晚上很晚叫我到酒吧來

說還有他的朋友，因此我難得地打扮好後去了

那天看到了那家酒吧的女老闆

我猛然覺醒了

全無化妝低頭無語就坐在那兒的那女老闆

看來既樸素又溫馨，美麗極了

飽嘗了世味後的認頭

得道的人寬厚的表情也都看得到了

（我看也那麼出色的女人

在你看時就更不用說了）

有愧於糟糠之妻，那天晚上還打扮的我自己

我對之感到無限地慚愧，顯得醜極了

暫時將自尊全擱在一邊

要迎合男人的視線的

連酒吧女老闆都不如的

我這女人耍的淺薄花招真的令人慚愧無比了

"That Night"

 

At a very late hour of that night, my husband asked me to come to a tavern.

Hearing that he was with his friends, I put on makeup for a change before I went.

Having seen the tavern lady on that day,

I came to my senses with a start.

Without a hint of makeup, just sitting there gently,

She looked ingenuous, warm, and alluring.

The resignation of someone who went through the ups and downs of life,

And even the generous expression of an enlightened person could be seen.

(A woman that charming even to my eyes,

Must be, it's needless to say, unimaginable to yours.)

Of myself who even put on makeup that night, being oblivious

Of my status as the lawful spouse, I felt so ashamed, so repulsive.

Setting aside my self-respect totally for a while,

Catering to men's gaze,

Was not even on par with the tavern lady—

The cheap trickery of mine as a woman was so very disgraceful.

"그날 밤"

 

 남편이 밤늦게 술집에서 불렀습니다

 남편 친구까지 있다기에 모처럼 화장까지 하고 나갔습니다

 그날 나는 그 술집 마담을 보고

 정신이 번쩍 들었습니다

 화장도 전혀 없이 다소곳이 앉아 있던 그 마담은

 소박하고 따뜻하고 아름다워 보였습니다

 산전수전 다 겪고난 사람의 체념

 득도한 너그러운 표정도 보였습니다

 (내 눈에도 저만한 각씨

 임 눈에야 오죽하리)

 조강지처답지 않게 그 밤에 화장까지 한 내 자신이

 무척 부끄럽고 추했습니다

 잠시 내 자존심을 쏙 빼버리고

 사내들의 눈에 영합하려던

 술집 마담보다 오히려 더 못한

 내 여자다운 얕은 수작이 정말 부끄러웠습니다
